Article summary

Relay Servers are machines (enterprise servers, virtual machines, or standard PCs) that are strategically placed in-between Dr. Know and your other vendor's product. Relay servers also run software provided by Dr. Know. Once installed, this machine will detect your connection configuration and fully manage the real-time communications between both products.

Relay servers require an active Internet connection for communication with the Dr. Know platform. Additionally, they require the ability to communicate with the other vendor's HL7 server or PC. This is typically accomplished by placing the relay server within an existing trusted network or by establishing a VPN connection between the vendor's network and the network where the relay server will physically reside.

Relay servers communicate with other products via the industry standard HL7 messaging protocol.

For network transfer of messages, relay servers support the TCP/IP protocol for socket-based communications. The HL7 Minimal Lower Layer Protocol (MLLP) is used for framing HL7 messages.

By conforming to industry standard communications protocols, providing an easy-to-use connection building experience, and utilizing the Symmetry integration platform, Dr. Know subscribers can build connections to their other products faster than ever before.
